The Cardoner Prayer Garden
The Cardoner prayer garden is named after the Cardoner river, close to Manresa, in Spain, where St Ignatius of Loyola had a great mystical experience. St Ignatius of Loyola, who at that time had recently converted from his worldly ways and his pursuit of worldly desires, went to Manresa to pursuit more holy desires. One day, he decided to go to the bank of the river Cardoner to pray. During his prayer, he has a very extraordinary vision which he explains in his autobiography as follows: He sat down for a little while with his face to the river—Cardoner—which was running deep. While he was seated there, the eyes of his understanding began to be opened; though he did not see any vision, he understood and knew many things, both spiritual things and matters of faith and learning, and this was with so great an enlightenment that everything seemed new to him. It was as if he were a new man with a new intellect. The Cardoner Prayer garden in Chikuni is a place for prayer and reflection. It is a place where the Jesuits here in Chikuni hope will create the same atmosphere in which St Ignatius of Loyola had his mystical experience. It is our hope that pilgrims to the Cardoner Prayer garden will leave with an experience which will open the eyes of their understanding to See, Love, and Serve God in a more concrete and practical way. Welcome to the Cardoner Prayer Garden!!!!!!! |
Not only does the Prayer garden offer a serene environment for prayer, it is also a historical landmark for the Chikuni township. In the prayer garden, you will find the tree under which negotiations for the building of the new mission was held.
